In 2018, my husband of 34 years passed away. The loss enveloped me in a fog, and I found myself navigating life on autopilot. Gradually, as time passed, I began to feel a semblance of normalcy return. Towards the end of 2019, I met a man through a business encounter. This chance meeting would be one of the last for a while, given the global events that unfolded in 2020.
To my surprise, this man expressed interest in me. I was genuinely taken aback. The attention was both flattering and unexpectedly exciting. I engaged in light-hearted flirting, something I had not imagined doing again. This encounter sparked a realization within me—I had not considered the possibility of finding someone new.
February 2020 brought with it a particularly stormy Sunday. My butterfly tree had toppled onto the conservatory, the dog waste bin had scattered across the lawn, and my neighbour’s recycling had blown into my front garden. Faced with these minor disasters, I couldn’t muster the energy to venture outside. In the midst of this, my dear friend Sue called from Dubai. I shared my minor woes, which, given my recent experiences, felt more burdensome than they should have. “Come to Dubai,” she suggested. I couldn’t go immediately, but I booked a trip for a short break two weeks later.
That brief holiday in Dubai marked a turning point. I returned feeling rejuvenated, having lost a bit of weight, gained a tan, and read a few self-help books from the airport. It’s remarkable what a short break can do for one’s spirit. I felt a spark of excitement at the thought of dating again.
So, how did I know I was ready? In truth, I wasn’t entirely sure. The world of dating had evolved significantly since my teenage years. However, in that moment, by giving myself time and space, I felt a shift within me. It was more of an intuitive feeling than a conscious decision. This feeling indicated a readiness for change, even if I wasn’t entirely certain what that change would entail.
Embracing the Journey Ahead
As I navigated this new chapter, I discovered that dating in my 50s and 60s brought a sense of adventure and self-discovery. Each interaction, whether successful or not, became a learning experience. I realized the importance of self-compassion and patience. This journey isn’t just about finding a new partner; it’s also about rediscovering oneself and understanding one’s own needs and desires.
Whether you meet someone through chance or through more modern methods like online dating, remember that it’s never too late to find joy, companionship, and maybe even love again.
Four Years Later: A New Perspective
Four years later, as I am now a trained Relationship, Dating, and Intimacy Coach, I realize that I was beginning to trust the feelings within my body instead of the negative thoughts in my head. Although I encountered many situations where I doubted myself and fell into old patterns, it was certainly a great start to my dating journey, which eventually led me to love.
